Award winning artist Cecilia A. Murray lives on Edisto Island, South Carolina. Originally from Connecticut, Cecilia graduated with a BFA in Fashion Design from Parson’s School of Design in New York City in 1986. After 20 years of designing footwear for American and European women, Cecilia returned to her first love, plein air painting.

Pastel is her medium of choice, as it is a wonderful, luminescent medium for painting light and shadow. After studying with such noted artists as Liz Haywood-Sullivan, Doug Dawson, Richard McKinley and Donna Rossetti-Bailey, Cecilia’s work gained recognition on the national level. The artist was awarded Best in Show in Kennebunkport, Maine in June, 2011, for her painting “Tidal Inlet”. Cecilia and her paintings were featured in Massachusetts’ South Shore Living Magazine, the Bosque Arts Classic in Texas, and the Connecticut Pastel Society’s ‘Renaissance in Pastel’ show in 2011. Cecilia has won several additional awards, including an honorable mention at the Duxbury Art Complex Museum for “My Blue Heaven’ in 2012, the Wallis Award for ‘Homecoming’ in Portsmouth, ME, in 2013, and first place for pastel for ‘Radiance II’ in 2013 at the South Shore Arts Center in Cohasset, MA.

Cecilia’s primary focus is the low country landscape. Botany Bay on Edisto Island is a favorite spot, along with the shrimp boats and rivers along the ACE basin.

Cecilia opened the Cecil Byrne Gallery in Charleston, SC in 2014. Award winning pastel and oil painters such as Liz Haywood-Sullivan, Mike Beeman, Ann Watcher, and Susan Gilkey are represented in the gallery at 60 Broad Street.
